Definition of aerospace engineering

Aerospace engineering deals with the science, design, production, and use of robots, spacecraft, and aircraft that travel within or outside of the earth’s atmosphere.

Engineers in this area develop communications satellites, rockets, spacecraft for deep space exploration, and aircraft. Additionally, wind turbines for renewable energy, urban air mobility, unmanned aerial vehicles, self-driving cars, and balloon-borne telescopes are all projects of aerospace engineers.

The two specializations available to aerospace engineers are aeronautical engineering and astronautical engineering.

Aircraft engineer

An aeronautical engineer uses their technical expertise to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of an aircraft. This covers the aircraft’s parts, propulsion system, and design.

Aeronautical engineers create, develop, produce, and maintain both civil and military aircraft, aeronautical systems, and aeronautical components in order to improve fuel efficiency and flight safety. They also keep in mind how important it is to reduce expenses and the negative environmental effects of air travel.

Aerospace technician

Engineering for spacecraft that operate outside of the Earth’s atmosphere is the primary goal of astronautical engineering (versus an aeronautical engineer who deals primarily with aircraft that function inside the atmosphere of Earth).

As a specialist in the study of spacecraft, an astronautical engineer, also known as a rocket scientist, focuses on subjects like propulsion, guidance systems, celestial mechanics, thermodynamics, and aerodynamics.

A few examples of spacecraft include missiles, rockets, remote sensing satellites, space launchers, spacecraft, navigational systems, planetary probes, and communication, direct broadcasting, and reconnaissance satellites.

Best Aerospace Engineering Schools in Pakistan

Aeronautical engineering was initially referred to as aerospace engineering and those who earned the degree and found employment were referred to as aerospace engineers. However, as new developments revealed that this was not a narrow field, experts divided aeronautical engineering into two main subfields, namely aeronautics, and astronautics. Check out the list of top universities in Pakistan for aeronautical engineering below.

What’s it like to work as an aerospace engineer?

Aerospace engineers design or construct aircraft, spacecraft, missiles, or other defense-related systems in offices, laboratories, or manufacturing facilities. They can work in manufacturing, analysis and design, and research and development for either private businesses or the federal government.

Typical companies are:

  • aerospace and aviation businesses
  • airline companies
  • organizations engaged in research and development
  • Consultancies for contracting
  • Public Service
  • A military force
  • Universities and government organizations like The Ministry of Defense

Aerospace engineers frequently spend a lot of time working in offices, using sophisticated software programs and computers to help with design elements. These computer programs create virtual models, and it is the responsibility of the aerospace engineer to carry out evaluations and test simulations prior to the start of the manufacturing process.
