What is Biomedical Engineering?

The goal of biomedical engineering is to develop technological fixes for medical issues. Biomedical engineering, a sector that is rapidly expanding, develops technology to meet healthcare needs.

In order to address problems in the healthcare sector, biomedical engineering applies engineering principles and design concepts to human biology and medicine. This could involve the creation of surgical tools, advancements in medical equipment, or the discovery of fresh medical imaging methods.

Course script of Biomedical Engineering

You will learn from engineers, scientists, and clinicians during this Biomedical Engineering course. This gives you a firm grasp on how engineering enhances patient care and gives you the chance to gain useful experience in a clinical setting while learning about the anatomy and workings of human biology.

You’ll learn about design, optics, instrumentation, and medical sciences as well as develop a comprehensive understanding of the applications and use cases for the technologies you create. The biomedical sector will help you hone your research and business management skills.

SCHEDULE STRUCTURE of Biomedical Engineering

Regardless of whether you are pursuing a BEng or MEng degree, you will take the same courses during the first three years.

YEAR 1

You’ll enroll in classes in math, dynamics, electronics, materials, statics, thermodynamics, and engineering techniques in addition to biomedical engineering. The industry-favored interdisciplinary approach also makes it simple to switch to the majority of other engineering disciplines at the end of year 1 if you so choose.

YEAR 2

In addition, you will study engineering mathematics, mechanics, biomaterials, biomedical engineering techniques, electronic engineering, engineering design, and engineering in biological systems from the cell to the entire body.

YEAR 3

More complex engineering and biomedical topics, such as biological fluid mechanics, biomechanics, modeling, instrumentation and control, statistics, medical imaging, and human biological sciences will all be covered in your studies.

4th and 5th years

You will complete a project in year 4 of the BEng program. Students in Year 4 of the MEng program work on a multidisciplinary design project. In addition to a variety of options, all year 4 students continue to take engineering, biomedical and life sciences, and medical courses. Fifth-year MEng students will work on a thorough research-based project in business, at a clinic, or at another university.

WORLDWIDE LINKS

You will be able to apply to spend your third academic year at a recognized partner university abroad. Our strong connections with international academic, business, and clinical partners also enable our MEng students to complete their six-month projects abroad.

WHY SEARCH INTO BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING?

  • Medical Device Regulation is emphasized in the Biomedical Engineering program.
  • Students in their final year of study will take a course in biomedical engineering entrepreneurship to give them the knowledge and skills they need to start their own businesses.
  • MEng students in their final year will complete a six-month placement in industry, a university abroad, or the University of Glasgow research facilities.
  • We are currently pursuing reaccreditation with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for our BEng and MEng degrees, which have already received accreditation from the Institute of Engineering and Technology and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine.
  • There are a number of engineering-related student organizations here, including GUBMES, Sensus, and Handprints.
  • You’ll engage in practical activities, such as excursions to nearby hospitals. With engineers and clinicians contributing to lectures, projects, and case studies, as well as providing work placements, you will profit from our strong ties to business and the NHS.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

In manufacturing companies, the NHS, and a variety of other industries both in the UK and abroad, our graduates are well-represented. This degree can be a great foundation for graduate study in medicine.

Our medical sciences programs are flexible in the way they are taught, giving students a solid foundation on which to embark on a professional career, conduct research, or advance to postgraduate study.
