Biomedical Engineering Definition
The application of engineering concepts and design principles to biology and medicine for either diagnostic or therapeutic purposes in the healthcare sector is known as biomedical engineering.
Major in Bioengineering
Bioengineering is a field that applies engineering principles to biological and medical issues. It involves finding solutions at various scales, from molecular and cellular to larger-scale issues like prosthetics and medical equipment.
By its very nature, bioengineering is very interdisciplinary and may incorporate elements from the physical, chemical, computer, and biological sciences as well as mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineering.
In that it includes biological devices that are applicable to basic science research and methods as well, bioengineering differs slightly from biomedical engineering in this regard. Bioengineering has a broader application.
Educate yourself in the United Arab Emirates
The United Arab Emirates, whose economy is rapidly expanding and changing, is well-known for exporting gas and oil and is rising in popularity as a travel destination.
The incredibly advanced cities of the United Arab Emirates are home to some of the most stunning architectural achievements ever created, as well as universities that can provide top-notch instruction to students from around the world.
Several universities from the UAE are listed in the top 500 of the QS World University Rankings, and even more, are listed in the top 1,000.
Biomedical Engineering in UAE
In the quickly developing field of biomedical sciences, newer scientific discoveries and technological innovations are a constant presence. Following accreditation from the UAE Ministry of Education [Initial Approval Letter], the College of Medicine launched the Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences [BBMS] program in 2014.
On the Ministry of Education, UAE website [Link], the program is listed under Ministry licensed, internationally accredited programs. It was reaccredited by the Ministry of Education in April 2021.
Graduate and undergraduate programs
Conditions for Graduation
- Finishing 128 credits (including a research project and clinical laboratory training credits)
- Achieving a 2.0 CGPA minimum
- A minimum grade of D (60%) is required for each course
A bachelor’s degree in science is awarded to graduates.
A review of the Bioengineering program’s ABET accreditation will be conducted after the first graduating class. If the ABET accreditation is granted, it becomes effective for the first graduating class without further action.
Master of Science in Biomedical
The first course of its kind to be offered in the GCC is the Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering (MSBME). You will be prepared for advanced careers in biomedical engineering and/or doctoral studies through this exciting, multidisciplinary program.
MSBME program
Students can choose from a variety of multidisciplinary specializations in the MSBME program including
- Healthcare operations management,
- Planning and risk management,
- Biomedical informatics,
- instrumentation,
- Signal processing,
- Biomaterials,
- Drug delivery,
- And biomechanics.
All biomedical engineers’ technical skills are improved by these study areas, enabling them to meet both the needs of the present and those of the future.

What do you do in Biomedical Engineering?
In the area of healthcare, the program supports five of the nine pillars that will serve as the framework for Abu Dhabi’s social, political, and economic future.
- You will take courses in biomedical instrumentation, biosensors and transducers, medical imaging, medical device design, AI in medicine, physiological modeling, mobile medical applications, and magnetic resonance imaging through this BSc in a biomedical engineering program that is created to meet international ABET standards.
- You will learn how to use your knowledge and abilities in biomedical engineering to solve issues, plan biomedical experiments, and use, maintain, and create medical equipment and devices.
- You will develop a thorough understanding of the moral and professional obligations of this field as you design biosystems or processes taking social, economic, and environmental considerations into account. Additionally, you will get the chance to improve your research abilities, which are essential in a knowledge-based economy.
- The program, which was created in collaboration with the Bioengineering Department of the University of Louisville in Kentucky, USA, takes advantage of a global research facility devoted to utilizing machine learning and artificial intelligence to develop computer-aided diagnosis systems to assist physicians in battling illnesses, enhancing the quality of life, and influencing the future of smart healthcare.
- The program focuses on the uses of AI, wearables, mobile apps, and the Internet of Things in healthcare, making it unique in the UAE.
PURPOSE Biomedical engineering
The Biomedical Engineering programs aim to prepare graduates for advanced biomedical engineering careers and/or doctoral studies.

Scope of biomedical engineering in UAE
According to a recent study, the UAE healthcare market will expand by 12.7% to AED71.56 billion by 2020, and there will be 13,881 more hospital beds available.
By upholding and enhancing the standard of healthcare in the nation and bringing down costs through the application of advanced technologies, biomedical engineers are required to sustain such growth.
The need for biomedical engineers has grown as a result of recent events in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, particularly in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations.
Healthcare services, such as hospitals, clinics, medical colleges, medical technology suppliers, and biomedical engineering, which are reportedly one of the fastest-growing engineering disciplines globally, are in high demand and are expanding in the MENA region as a result of the region’s rapid population growth.
